Alloy 20, also known as Alloy 20Cb-3 or Carpenter 20, is a nickel-iron-chromium austenitic alloy specifically developed to combat sulfuric acid corrosion at a range of concentrations and temperatures. Stabilised with niobium (columbium), it resists intergranular corrosion after welding and offers strong performance in phosphoric acid, nitric acid, and chloride-bearing media. Its balanced composition also prevents chloride-ion stress-corrosion cracking, a common failure mode in standard austenitic stainless steels such as 304 and 316.
