What is the difference between ERNiCrMo-4 and ERNiCrMo-3?

ERNiCrMo-4 (Hastelloy C276 filler wire) contains 15 to 17% molybdenum and 14.5 to 16.5% chromium, making it the preferred choice for highly aggressive reducing acid environments including hydrochloric acid, wet chlorine, and mixed acid service. ERNiCrMo-3 (Inconel 625 filler wire) contains 8 to 10% molybdenum and 20 to 23% chromium, offering excellent high-temperature oxidation resistance but lower resistance to reducing acids. Choose ERNiCrMo-4 where maximum pitting resistance equivalent (PREN) is required.

Can ERNiCrMo-4 filler wire be used to weld dissimilar metals?

Yes. ERNiCrMo-4 per AWS A5.14 is widely used for dissimilar metal joints, particularly between Hastelloy C276 and austenitic stainless steels such as SS316L. Its nickel-rich chemistry acts as a buffer between the two base metals, minimising hot cracking risk and maintaining corrosion resistance at the weld interface. It is also used for cladding and overlay welding on carbon steel substrates in the chemical process industry.

What is the difference between AWS A5.14 and SFA 5.14?

AWS A5.14 is the American Welding Society specification for nickel and nickel-alloy bare welding electrodes and rods, including ERNiCrMo-4 filler wire. SFA 5.14 is the corresponding ASME (Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code) adoption of the same standard. In practice, both specifications define identical chemical and mechanical requirements for ERNiCrMo-4. AWS A5.14 is referenced in structural and fabrication work; SFA 5.14 is cited for pressure vessel and piping code compliance under ASME Section IX.

Is Hastelloy C276 filler wire compatible with Hastelloy C22 base metal?

ERNiCrMo-4 (Hastelloy C276 filler wire) can be used to weld Hastelloy C22 base metal in applications where the weld deposit corrosion resistance is acceptable at C276 chemistry levels. For critical C22-to-C22 joints in oxidising environments, ERNiCrMo-10 (Hastelloy C22 filler wire, UNS N06022) is the preferred matching filler. Consult your welding engineer for PWPS qualification requirements.
