What Is Monel 400? Alloy Composition and Metallurgical Properties

Monel 400 is a solid solution of nickel-copper alloy, which is highly resistant to corrosion, strong, and resilient in the most extreme industrial environments. It is an alloy that is made of about 63-70% nickel, 28-34% copper, iron (Fe) and traces of manganese and silicon. It does not become hardened solely through heat treatment, cold working adds to it excellent dimensional stability and strength.

Tensile strength of this alloy is 517-620 Mpa, yield strength is 172-345 Mpa, and excellent ductile behaviour of the alloy is observed at cryogenic temperatures to 538degC (1000degF). DIN 2.4360 Monel 400 Pipe consists of a melting point of around 1350degC, which means that it is sure to perform when the pressure and heat are very high. ASTM B165 UNS N04400 tubes are very popular in heat exchangers, condenser tubes, and evaporators of marine and offshore constructions due to its chloride stress corrosion resistance.

Welding and Fabrication Guide for Monel 400 Pipe

GTAW, GMAW, or SMAW can be used to weld Monel 400 Welded Pipe without any required post welding heat treatment. All Monel 400 weld joints should be filled with ERNiCu-7 filler. Heat-tint oxides are removed by treating the weld with an appropriate acid solution to restore corrosion resistance in the weld area – this is suggested to prevent brittleness or localised corrosion.

Hot working can be performed at 648degC-1176degC; cold working strengthens and adds a better surface finish. Heavy cold work can be restored to ductility by annealing at 926deg C.

Monel 400 Corrosion Resistance : Chemical Compatibility Guide

Monel 400 owes its broad corrosion resistance to the synergistic effect of nickel and copper. In reducing environments, nickel dominates; in mildly oxidising conditions, copper contributes passivity. The result is an alloy that outperforms stainless steel in chloride, fluoride, and reducing acid environments.

Monel 400 Pipe Price Per Kg in India — Request Current Price

Monel 400 pipe price per kg in India varies based on OD, wall thickness, schedule, surface finish, and order quantity. As a direct manufacturer and stockist, Kalpataru Piping offers competitive ex-works and CIF pricing with no middlemen margin.

As an indicative reference, Monel 400 seamless pipe in SCH 40 (small-bore up to 2″) typically ranges from INR 2,800–5,500/kg ex-Mumbai, depending on wall thickness and finish. Prices are indexed to LME nickel and copper — contact us for a current confirmed quote.

Factors that affect Monel 400 pipe price:

  • Nickel and copper LME prices (Monel 400 is 63–70% Ni)
  • Pipe diameter, wall thickness, and schedule
  • Surface finish (BA and polished carry a premium over AP)
  • Quantity: mill run vs ex-stock
  • MTC type: 3.1 standard; 3.2 with witness inspection attracts additional cost
For ex-stock items (4 mm to 219 mm OD, standard schedules), typical dispatch is 3–5 working days from Mumbai. Mill orders for large-diameter or non-standard wall thickness carry 8–14 week lead times. Contact us for project-specific scheduling.

Monel 400 vs Monel K500: Which Grade to Specify?

Monel K500 (UNS N05500) is a precipitation-hardening variant of Monel 400. The table below helps procurement engineers and material specifiers choose the correct grade:

Property Monel 400 (UNS N04400) Monel K500 (UNS N05500)
Base Composition Ni 63–70%, Cu 28–34% Ni 63–70%, Cu 28–34% + Al, Ti
Tensile Strength (annealed) 550 MPa (80 ksi) 900–1100 MPa (130–160 ksi) aged
Yield Strength (annealed) 240 MPa (35 ksi) 620–690 MPa (90–100 ksi) aged
Hardness 65 HRB 25–35 HRC (aged)
Magnetic Properties Slightly magnetic Non-magnetic (aged)
Weldability Readily weldable; no PWHT required More complex; age-hardening post-weld required
Corrosion Resistance Excellent — seawater, HF acid, reducing acids Equivalent to Monel 400
Typical Pipe/Tube Use Chemical plant piping, heat exchangers, marine Downhole tubing, shafts, pump impellers
Standard (Pipe/Tube) ASTM B165 (seamless), ASTM B725 (welded) ASTM B165 (seamless), ASTM B725 (welded)
Cost Lower Higher (additional precipitation-hardening process)

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Monel 400 pipes and tubes resist corrosion in seawater?

Yes. Monel 400 Pipes and tubes are very resistant to seawater application. They contain high nickel-copper content that prevents pitting, crevice corrosion and stress-corrosion cracking. In stagnant seawater at temperatures above 60degC, further monitoring is advisable.

What sizes and forms are available for Monel 400 pipes and tubes?

Monel 400 pipes are offered 1/8″ NPS to 48″ NPS (OD 4 mm to 1219 mm), in SCH 5S to SCH 160 and XXH. Wall sizes vary between 0.5 mm and 20 mm and include seamless, welded, ERW, and EFW round and square and rectangular sections.

What is the price of Monel 400 pipe per kg in India?

Indian Monel 400 pipeline price per kilogram depends on the OD, wall thickness, schedule, surface finish, quantity and the LME nickel/copper rates. Indicative range of SCH 40 seamless (small-bore) INR 2800-5500/kg ex-Mumbai. Current confirmed quote Kalpataru Piping, contact them.

Can Monel 400 pipes and tubes be welded?

Yes. GTAW, GMAW and SMAW procedures can be used to weld monel 400. There is no post-weld heat treatment standard service. ErniCu-7 filler wire is suggested.

What standards do Monel 400 pipes and tubes comply with?

Monel 400 pipes and tubes are based upon ASTM B165 / ASME SB165 (seamless), ASTM B725 / ASME SB725 (welded pipe), ASTM B730 (welded tube), and AMS 4574 (aerospace tube). Mechanical properties and chemical composition meet the UNS N04400 / DIN 2.4360.

What is ASTM B730 and when does it apply?

ASTM B730 is welded nickel-copper alloy (Monel 400) tubes in general corrosion-resistant service. It is used when the end-use specification requires welded (not seamless) Monel 400 tubing, normally in heat exchangers and condensers.

What is AMS 4574 and when is it required?

Aerospace Material Specification Aerospace Material Specification 4574 Aerospace fuel, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems Monel 400 seamless and welded tubing is specified as Aerospace Material Specification 4574. When application is aerospace or defence and project tighter dimensional tolerances and more traceability documentation are needed, specify AMS 4574.
