What is Monel Flanges?
Monel is a family of nickel-copper alloys primarily Monel 400 and Monel K500 prized for outstanding resistance to seawater, hydrofluoric acid, and reducing chemical environments. Monel flanges connect pipes, valves, and equipment in piping systems that must resist corrosion, chloride stress cracking, and cyclic thermal loads. As part of our broader Monel Products range, Kalpataru Piping manufactures Monel flanges alongside Monel buttweld fittings, Monel pipes and tubes, and Monel fasteners, giving project engineers a single, quality-assured source for complete Monel piping systems.
Our flanges are available in Monel 400 often referred to as Alloy 400 flanges and specified to ASTM B564 UNS N04400 (see our dedicated Monel 400 flanges page) and Monel K500 (see Monel K500 flanges) grades, forged to close tolerances and finished to Raised Face (RF), Flat Face (FF), or Ring Type Joint (RTJ) configurations. Every Monel 400 flange leaving our facility is traceable to its B564 UNS N04400 heat number, giving project teams full material traceability from mill to site.

Types of Monel Flanges We Manufacture
Flange Face Types & When to Use Them
| Face Type | Code | When to Use |
|---|---|---|
| Flat Face | FF | Full-bore gasket contact; used with cast iron or bronze mating equipment to avoid damage |
| Raised Face | RF | Most common type; concentrates bolt load over a smaller gasket area for efficient sealing (Class 150–2500) |
| Ring Type Joint | RTJ | Metal-to-metal seal using a soft metallic ring gasket; specified for Class 600 and above, high-pressure/high-temperature service |
Monel 400 vs Monel K500 Flanges
| Criteria | Monel 400 (UNS N04400) | Monel K500 (UNS N05500) |
|---|---|---|
| Strength | Moderate (550 MPa tensile) | High (896 MPa tensile, ~3x Monel 400 yield strength) |
| Hardening | Solid-solution strengthened; can be cold-worked | Precipitation-hardened (age-hardenable); requires post-weld age-hardening treatment |
| Corrosion Resistance | Excellent in seawater, acids, alkalis and HF acid service | Same corrosion resistance as Monel 400 with significantly higher strength |
| Magnetic Properties | Weakly magnetic when cold-worked | Non-magnetic; suitable for degaussing equipment and sensitive instrumentation |
| Typical Applications | Seawater piping, chemical process piping, HF alkylation units, heat exchangers | Offshore propeller shafts, pump impellers, oil drilling tools, turbine blades |
| Relative Cost | Lower cost; most economical for general corrosive service | Higher cost; justified where high mechanical load and corrosion resistance are both required |
