What Are Copper Nickel Products?

Copper Nickel, commonly referred to as Cu-Ni or Cupro Nickel, is a copper-based alloy containing 10% to 30% nickel along with small additions of iron and manganese for added strength and stability. This unique metallurgical composition gives copper nickel outstanding resistance to seawater corrosion, biofouling, and stress-corrosion cracking — properties that ordinary stainless steel and carbon steel simply cannot match in marine conditions. Kalpataru Piping manufactures and supplies the complete copper nickel product family, including pipes, tubes, sheets, plates, coils, bars, rods, wires, forged and buttweld fittings, flanges, and fasteners, available in 90/10, 70/30, and 95/5 grades to match the exact technical requirement of your application.

Copper Nickel 90/10 vs. 70/30: Which Grade Do You Need?

Choosing between 90/10 and 70/30 copper nickel depends on the severity of seawater velocity, pressure, and mechanical load in your application.

Criteria 90/10 CuNi 70/30 CuNi
Nickel Content 9–10% 29–30%
Relative Strength Moderate Higher
Erosion Resistance (high-velocity seawater) Good Excellent
Cost Lower Higher
Best Suited For General seawater piping, condenser tubes High-velocity systems, critical offshore piping

FAQs About Copper Nickel Products

What is Copper Nickel and why is it used in marine engineering?

Copper Nickel is a copper-nickel alloy prized for its exceptional resistance to seawater corrosion and biofouling. It is widely used in marine engineering for seawater piping, condensers, and heat exchangers because it maintains structural integrity even after years of continuous saltwater exposure.

What is the difference between Copper Nickel 90/10 and 70/30?

The main difference is nickel content and resulting strength: 90/10 (C70600) contains about 10% nickel and suits general seawater piping, while 70/30 (C71500) contains around 30% nickel, offering higher strength and better resistance to high-velocity seawater erosion, making it preferable for more demanding offshore applications.

Can Copper Nickel be welded or brazed?

Yes. Copper Nickel alloys offer excellent weldability and can be joined using TIG, MIG, or brazing techniques without significant loss of corrosion resistance, provided proper filler material and welding parameters are used.

Which industries commonly use Copper Nickel products?

Copper Nickel products are widely used in shipbuilding, desalination plants, offshore oil and gas platforms, power generation facilities, and chemical processing plants, anywhere reliable performance in seawater or corrosive marine environments is critical.

What is copper-nickel used for?

Copper-nickel is widely used in marine, offshore, shipbuilding, power generation, and desalination industries due to its excellent resistance to seawater corrosion and biofouling. It is commonly used for pipes, tubes, condensers, heat exchangers, and seawater piping systems.

What is the raw material of copper-nickel?

Copper-nickel is an alloy primarily made from copper and nickel, with small amounts of iron and manganese added to improve strength and corrosion resistance. Common grades include Copper Nickel 90/10 and Copper Nickel 70/30.
