What Makes Inconel 601 Different From Other Fastener Grades?
Inconel 601 is a nickel-chromium alloy with aluminium added to improve oxidation resistance at elevated temperature. The aluminium supports formation of a stable chromium-aluminium oxide layer that resists scaling and spalling during repeated heating and cooling. This makes Alloy 601 suitable for furnace hardware, heat-treatment equipment and other assemblies exposed to thermal cycling.
The grade also offers useful corrosion resistance in many aqueous and process environments. Where higher mechanical strength or different corrosion behaviour is the priority, Inconel 625 or Inconel 718 may be more appropriate. The comparison below should be treated as a selection guide only; final grade choice should follow the project specification and design conditions.

Inconel 601 vs. Other Nickel Alloy Fastener Grades
601 isn't the right call for every job. Here's roughly where it sits against the grades we get asked about most often.
| Grade | UNS | Yield Strength (min) | Max Service Temp. | Best Suited For |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Inconel 600 | N06600 | 35 ksi (240 MPa) | 2000°F (1093°C) | General corrosion & heat resistance |

Why Inconel 601 Is Used for High-Temperature Fasteners
A few things come up again and again when customers explain why they’ve moved to Alloy 601 for a particular job:
- It is selected for strong oxidation resistance at elevated temperature; actual fastener service limits depend on load, environment and joint design
- It copes well with carburizing and nitriding atmospheres, which is where a lot of furnace hardware actually fails first
- The oxide layer doesn’t spall, so fasteners that go through daily heat-cool cycles don’t lose material over time
- It’s still a reasonable performer in wet, corrosive conditions at ambient temperature — not just a high-heat specialist
- It stays ductile from cryogenic temperatures right through to its upper service limit
- It welds, machines and cold-forms without drama, which keeps custom fastener runs practical
- It is effectively non-magnetic, which makes it suitable for applications where low magnetic response is required
Manufacturing and Quality Control
Manufacturing Route
- Wire drawing and cold heading for standard bolt, screw and nut sizes
- Hot forging for larger diameters and heavy hex forms
- CNC turning and threading for studs, custom rods and non-standard profiles
- Heat treatment and surface finishing (passivation, plating, coating) as specified
What Gets Checked Before Anything Ships
- Ultrasonic testing (UT) on raw billets, before machining even starts, to catch internal flaws early
- 100% PMI (Positive Material Identification) scanning on every finished batch
- Tensile, yield and elongation testing to confirm the mechanical properties actually hold up
- Hardness and intergranular corrosion (IGC) checks where the application calls for them
- Dimensional and visual inspection against ASME B18.2.1 / B18.2.2 / B18.3 tolerances

FAQ’s About Hastelloy Products
What is the maximum temperature Inconel 601 fasteners can withstand?
Inconel 601 is used for high-temperature service because of its strong oxidation resistance, but a single universal temperature limit should not be applied to every fastener. Allowable service temperature depends on load, joint design, environment and exposure time; confirm the project limit before specification.
What is the UNS and Werkstoff number for Inconel 601 fasteners?
UNS N06601 and Werkstoff Nr. 2.4851 identify Alloy 601. ASTM F468/F468M applies to nonferrous bolts, cap screws and studs, while ASTM F467/F467M applies to nuts. ASTM B166/B564 or equivalent material standards may apply depending on product form.
How is Inconel 601 different from Inconel 600 fasteners?
Inconel 601 contains aluminium that helps form a stable protective oxide layer, giving it strong oxidation resistance during repeated high-temperature cycling. Inconel 600 has a different chemistry and property balance. Final grade selection should be based on the required mechanical properties, environment and design temperature.
Are Inconel 601 fasteners magnetic?
No, effectively not — magnetic permeability sits around 1.003, close enough to non-magnetic that it works fine near sensitive instrumentation or electrical equipment.
Can Inconel 601 fasteners be welded?
Yes. Inconel 601 is weldable using suitable procedures and filler metals. The alloy is generally supplied in annealed or solution-treated condition rather than as an age-hardened grade, so the welding procedure should match the product form and service requirement.
What sizes of Inconel 601 bolts, nuts and washers do you stock?
M3 to M56 (3/16″ to 2″), in lengths from 3 mm to 200 mm. If your size falls outside that range or needs a non-standard thread, tell us the drawing spec and we’ll quote it as a custom run.
Do you provide Mill Test Certificates with Inconel 601 fasteners?
Yes. Inconel 601 fasteners can be supplied with EN 10204 Type 3.1 certification, with Type 3.2 or third-party inspection available when specified. Certificate scope should match the purchase order and agreed inspection requirements.
