Hastelloy C276 Pipe and Tube (UNS N10276 / DIN 2.4819 / ASME SB622) is the most widely specified nickel-molybdenum-chromium alloy piping product in severe corrosion service globally. Combining high molybdenum (15–17%) and tungsten (3–4.5%) in a low-carbon nickel matrix, ASTM B622 Hastelloy C276 seamless pipe delivers outstanding resistance to pitting, crevice corrosion, and stress corrosion cracking (SCC) across the broadest range of aggressive chemical environments of any standard nickel alloy. The ultra-low carbon content (0.01% max) suppresses grain-boundary carbide precipitation during welding, making Alloy C276 pipe suitable for use in the as-welded condition without post-weld heat treatment, a critical fabrication advantage in chemical plant, offshore, FGD, and pharmaceutical applications.

Why Specify Hastelloy C276 Pipe & Tube?
Hastelloy C276 is considered the most versatile corrosion-resistant alloy available in wrought pipe and tube form. It is one of the very few alloys resistant to wet chlorine gas, hypochlorite solutions, and chlorine dioxide solutions, environments that eliminate austenitic stainless steels and most other nickel alloys. Key reasons engineers specify UNS N10276 pipe over 316L, duplex, or Inconel 625:
- Broadest chemical resistance of any standard Ni-Mo-Cr alloy — reducing, oxidising, and mixed-acid environments
- No post-weld heat treatment (PWHT) required — suitable for as-welded chemical process fabrication
- Resistance to grain boundary precipitation in the weld heat-affected zone (HAZ)
- Exceptional pitting and crevice corrosion resistance in chloride-bearing media (seawater, FGD condensate, HCl)
- NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156 compliant — approved for sour gas service (H₂S + CO₂ + Cl⁻)
- Service temperature range: cryogenic (-196°C) to 1038°C (1900°F) oxidation resistance
- Improved fabricability over older Alloy C — available seamless, welded (ERW/EFW), cold-drawn, and U-bend

Types of Hastelloy C276 Pipe & Tube Supplied
- Hastelloy C276 Seamless Pipe (ASTM B622)
ASTM B622 Hastelloy C276 seamless pipe is hot-extruded or cold-drawn from a solid billet, producing a pipe with no longitudinal weld seam. The seamless process preserves the full density and mechanical properties of the alloy, resulting in superior pressure-bearing capability and uniform wall thickness. C276 seamless pipe is the preferred specification for high-pressure chemical reactors, sour gas wellhead equipment, and heat exchangers where weld-zone integrity is critical. Available from 4 mm OD × 0.5 mm wall to 219 mm OD × 20 mm wall. - Hastelloy C276 Welded Pipe (ASTM B619)
ASTM B619 UNS N10276 welded pipe is manufactured from Alloy C276 strip or plate, rolled and longitudinally seam-welded, then solution-annealed and pickled. The welded process enables the production of larger diameters (up to 1219.2 mm OD) and longer single-piece lengths not achievable by seamless extrusion. C276 welded pipe is widely used for large-bore FGD ducting, offshore structural piping, and chemical plant headers where the cost advantage of welded construction is accepted by the design code. - Hastelloy C276 ERW / EFW Tube (ASTM B626)
ASTM B626 Hastelloy C276 welded tube (ERW/EFW) covers small-bore, thin-wall tubing for instrumentation, heat exchanger, and condenser applications. Alloy C276 ERW tube provides cost-effective performance in corrosive process streams where seamless tube wall integrity requirements can be met by the welded process. Available in wall thicknesses from 0.010″ and a comprehensive range of OD sizes from 1/16″ to 3½”. - Cold-Drawn Hastelloy C276 Tube
Cold-drawn Hastelloy C276 tube (CDW) delivers tighter dimensional tolerances on OD, ID, and wall thickness compared to hot-worked seamless, making it the standard for precision instrumentation tubing, hydraulic lines, and heat exchanger bundles. The cold-drawing process also improves surface finish. Supplied solution-annealed and pickled (ASTM B622 / ASME SB622); available in bright-annealed finish for pharmaceutical and food-grade applications. - Heat Exchanger & Boiler Tube
Hastelloy C276 heat exchanger tube (UNS N10276 boiler tube) is specified for shell-and-tube exchangers, condensers, evaporators, and feed-water heaters in chemical processing, pharmaceutical, and power generation service. C276 heat exchanger tube can be supplied with automatic-shape processing, nitrogen-protection annealing, ultrasonic testing, and cold-drawing to tight tolerance for precision tube-to-tubesheet joints.
Alloy C276 Pipe Chemical Composition (ASTM B622 / UNS N10276)
The following chemical composition limits apply to Hastelloy C276 pipes and tubes per ASTM B622 / B619 / B626. All values in weight percent (wt%). Material Test Reports (MTRs) certifying heat chemistry are supplied with every consignment.
| Ni | Mo | Cr | W | Fe | Co max | C max | Other |
| Balance (~57% min) | 15.0 – 17.0 | 14.5 – 16.5 | 3.0 – 4.5 | 4.0 – 7.0 | 2.5 max | 0.01 max | See note |
Note: Mn max 1.0%, Si max 0.08%, P max 0.04%, S max 0.03%, V max 0.35%. The ultra-low carbon (0.01% max) and silicon (0.08% max) limits are the key to C276 pipe’s weld-zone corrosion resistance, these suppress grain-boundary carbide and silicide precipitation in the heat-affected zone, enabling as-welded service in most chemical environments.

Hastelloy C276 Pipe Corrosion Resistance
Hastelloy C276 pipe and tube is specified for corrosion service because it resists a uniquely broad range of aggressive chemical environments. Key corrosive media where UNS N10276 pipe outperforms 316L stainless steel, duplex, and most other nickel alloys:
Reducing Acid Environments
- Hydrochloric acid (HCl) — all concentrations below 40°C; dilute HCl to boiling. Superior to Inconel 625 (Mo 9%) and all stainless steels.
- Sulfuric acid (H₂SO₄) — wide concentration range including hot dilute H₂SO₄ where 316L and duplex fail.
- Phosphoric acid — excellent across a broad concentration and temperature range
- Formic and acetic acids, acetic anhydride — pharmaceutical and fine chemical process streams
Oxidising and Mixed Environments
- Wet chlorine gas — one of the very few alloys resistant to wet Cl₂ and hypochlorite solutions
- Ferric chloride (FeCl₃) and cupric chloride (CuCl₂) — strong oxidising chloride pitting solutions
- Chlorine dioxide solutions (bleach plant in pulp and paper)
- Flue gas condensate (FGD) — SO₂ + HCl + HF in solution; the dominant material for absorber vessels and ducting
Chloride / Seawater / Sour Gas
- Seawater and brine — high PREN (~70); resists pitting and crevice attack in stagnant or flowing seawater
- Sour gas (H₂S + CO₂ + Cl⁻) — NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156 compliant; resists stress corrosion cracking
- Halide-bearing organic process streams — chlorinated solvents, reaction intermediates
Stress Corrosion Cracking (SCC) Resistance
Unlike austenitic stainless steels (316L, 304), which are prone to chloride stress corrosion cracking above ~60°C in the presence of tensile stress, Hastelloy C276 pipe is highly resistant to SCC across its full service temperature range. This makes it the alloy of choice for welded vessels, piping, and heat exchangers where chloride exposure, structural stress, and elevated temperature would eliminate stainless steel as a material option.

Frequently Asked Questions About Hastelloy C276 Pipe & Tubes
What are the specifications of Hastelloy C276 Pipe?
Hastelloy C276 pipes are manufactured per ASTM B622 (seamless, ASME SB622), ASTM B619 (welded, ASME SB619), and ASTM B626 (welded tube, ASME SB626). Available in sizes from 1/8″ NB to 8″ NB seamless and up to 1219 mm OD welded, in schedules SCH 5 through XXS. UNS N10276 / DIN 2.4819. Full dimensional data is available in the specification tables above.
What are the common uses of Hastelloy C276 Pipe?
Hastelloy C276 pipe is used in chemical processing (HCl, H₂SO₄, mixed-acid reactors), flue gas desulfurisation (FGD) scrubbers and ducting, oil and gas sour service wellhead equipment, pharmaceutical manufacturing, pulp and paper bleach plant piping, and marine / seawater systems. It is one of the few alloys resistant to wet chlorine gas, hypochlorite, and chlorine dioxide solutions.
How does Hastelloy C276 compare to other piping materials in corrosion resistance?
Hastelloy C276 offers the broadest corrosion resistance of any standard nickel alloy pipe. Compared to 316L stainless steel, C276 withstands HCl and H₂SO₄ at concentrations and temperatures where 316L shows corrosion rates above 1.0 mm/year. Compared to Inconel 625 (Mo 9%), C276 (Mo 16%) provides superior resistance in reducing acid and high-chloride environments due to higher molybdenum and tungsten content, with a Pitting Resistance Equivalent Number (PREN) of ~70 vs ~51 for 625.
What is the maximum operating temperature of Hastelloy C276?
Hastelloy C276 pipe has oxidation resistance to 1038°C (1900°F) in air. In aqueous corrosion service, the alloy performs reliably from cryogenic (−196°C) to approximately 400°C. Avoid sustained exposure in the 540–760°C range, this promotes intermetallic phase precipitation that reduces toughness. ASME B31.3 allowable stress values are tabulated up to 815°C.
What sizes are available for Hastelloy C276 Pipe?
Hastelloy C276 seamless pipe: 4 mm to 219 mm OD, wall 0.5–20 mm, schedules SCH 5 to XXS. Hastelloy C276 welded pipe: 5 mm to 1219 mm OD, wall 1.0–15 mm. Hastelloy C276 tube: small-bore from 1/16″ OD × 0.010″ wall to 3.5″ OD. Custom sizes to order. Contact Kalpataru Piping for stock availability and lead times.
Is Hastelloy C276 magnetic?
Hastelloy C276 is essentially non-magnetic, with magnetic permeability of 1.0002 at 200 oersted. This makes it suitable for applications where magnetic properties are a concern including MRI-adjacent pharmaceutical equipment, instrumentation, and electronic process control installations.
Does Hastelloy C276 Pipe require post-weld heat treatment (PWHT)?
No. PWHT is not required for Hastelloy C276 in most chemical process service applications. The ultra-low carbon (0.01% max) content minimises grain-boundary carbide precipitation during welding, enabling as-welded use. Solution annealing at 1121°C (2050°F) minimum followed by rapid water quench is recommended after severe cold forming (outer-fibre elongation ≥7%) or where maximum weld-zone corrosion resistance is specified.
