What is Alloy 20 (UNS N08020)?
Alloy 20, which is also referred to as Carpenter 20, Incoloy Alloy 20 and nickel Alloy 20. Similar international grading are UNS N08020, WNR 2.4660, AFNOR Z2NCUD31-20AZ, EN NiCr20CuMo, JIS SUS 304, BS 304S31, GOST 08X18N10. UNS N08020 (alloy 20) is an austenitic stainless steel material that has been created to be used in solutions involving sulfuric acid. This Alloy 20 material has good corrosion resistance superior to the 304 stainless steel and comparable to 316L and hence it can be applied in the chemical and petrochemical industry, plastics industry and power-generation industry. High copper concentration in A20 alloy is used to increase its performance in sulfuric acid environments. Stress-corrosion cracking problems that normally occur in 316L stainless steel are normally addressed using alloy 20. The columbium stabilization is denoted by the variant that is called Cb-3. This superalloy is very effective in chemical conditions that involve chlorides and sulfuric, phosphoric and nitric acids. Niobium addition inhibits intergranular corrosion and inhibits sensitization.
Alloy 20 (UNS N08020) is a general corrosion-resistant alloy, because it is balanced in terms of nickel, chromium, molybdenum and copper. Limited carbon content and stabilization of columbium enable the welded structures to be utilized in corrosive environments without the necessity of heat treatment after the welding. Alloy 20 has high resistance to chloride stress-corrosion cracking, and has high nickel content (33 percent) resulting in high resistance to SCC in stress corrosion cracking. It is often employed in situations where 316L does not survive the stress corrosion cracking conditions.
The alloy is manufactured to ASTM standards A265, B366, B463, B464, B471, B472, B473, B474, and B475; and meets the requirements of NACE MR0175. This is an A20 alloy which is used extensively to provide maximum resistance to acid attack.
Key Characteristics of Alloy 20 Material:
- Exceptional resistance to hot and cold sulfuric acid
- Excellent resistance to chloride stress-corrosion cracking
- Strong mechanical properties and fabricability
- Minimal carbide precipitation during welding
