What is Alloy 20?
Alloy 20 is an austenitic alloy that is based on nickel-iron-chromium & it is a high-performance alloy that has been developed to offer superior resistance against acid attacks, particularly sulfuric acid. It is an alloy of copper and molybdenum in controlled amounts that increases resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion in caustic chemical environments. Alloy 20 UNS N08020 is stabilized using niobium (columbium) to reduce the occurrence of precipitation of carbide during welding. Carpenter 20 alloy, or it is also referred to as Carpenter 20 alloy, is a material that has excellent general corrosion resistance and strength at high temperatures.
Manufacturing Process of ASTM B729 / ASTM B462 / ASTM B473 Alloy 20 Pipes
The austenitic steel raw materials are of high quality and are used in the manufacture of alloy 20 Pipes. Most of the major manufacturers of alloy 20 (UNS N08020) pipes stabilize the alloy with niobium to avoid sensitization and intergranular corrosion.
The manufacturing process includes:
- Hot or cold working
- Controlled heat treatment
- Water quenching for metallurgical stability
- Stress relieving to enhance performance
Hot forging is performed at the temperature of between 2100 °F to 2250 o C and then water quenching is done. Any heating that is lower than this can have adverse effects on stabilization of alloys. All these pipes & tubes are subjected to rigid quality checks to check dimensional and surface finish and chemical composition according to the ASTM and ASME requirements.
Corrosion Resistance & Mechanical Properties of Alloy 20 UNS N08020 Pipe
Alloy 20 Pipe is recognized by excellent resistance to corrosion and reliable mechanical characteristics that is appropriate in severe conditions of chemical processing. It works very well with sulfuric, phosphoric and nitric acid as it is also very resistant to pitting and crevice corrosion. It also displays an excellent chloride stress corrosion cracking resistance which adds reliability when subjected to demanding applications. Nevertheless, in the cases of very high concentrations of chloride ions, it is preferable to select particular materials and control operating conditions, as the corrosion rates can accelerate.
