Monel 400 Round Bars, Monel 400 Round Bars are produced through cold working that creates an refined microstructure that is made harder, stiffer and stronger mechanically. Surface finish is also enhanced at the same time, products like Monel 400 bright bar and square bars are enhanced by this process with a finer texture and better tensile properties.
UNS N04400 / WNR 2.4360 and 2.4361 Monel 400 (-63 percent nickel, 28 percent copper, with regulated amounts of iron, carbon, manganese, silicon, sulphur and trace lead (max 0.005 percent)). This alloy provides excellent performance in properties of seawater, steam, acids, alkalis, salt solutions and caustic conditions hence it is the alloy used in the marine, chemical and oil and gas industries.
In an annealed state, Monel 400 bar has a minimum tensile of 550 MPa and minimum yield of 240 Mpa and at a minimum tensile of 760 Mpa in cold-worked rods, see the tensile strength by condition table below. The alloy has a great ductility, thermal conductivity, alkaline resistance, and low room temperature magnetism. For full welding guidance, see our Monel 400 Welding Guidelines →

Monel 400 Round Bars Introduction
The Monel 400 Round Bars are made by cold working, which leads to the acquisition of a sophisticated microstructure that increases hardness, stiffness, and mechanical strength. Surface finish is also enhanced using cold working, and products such as Monel 400 Bright Bars and Square Bars are rendered to have a lighter texture and better tensile properties.
About 63 % of nickel, 28 % of copper, trace amounts of iron, carbon, manganese, silicon, sulphur and trace lead (max 0.005%) are found in Monel 400 (UNS N04400 / WNR 2.4360 & 2.4361). The composition offers excellent seawater, steam, acid, alkali, salt solutions and caustic environment resistance, and this is why the alloy is suited to marine, chemical and oil and gas industries. Monel 400 bars has a minimum tensile strength of approximately 550 MPa and a yield strength of 450 MPa at a minimum, which increases and goes as high as 760 MPa in cold-worked rods. The alloy is also very strong in ductility, thermal conductivity, alkaline resistance and has a weak level of magnetism at room temperature. The Monel 400 Round Bars are simple to machine, manufacture and weld with the normal industrial processes and are able to be seamlessly integrated in all projects. Their homogenous mix of strength, corrosion resistance and workability has made them a material of choice when one is required to design long-lasting applications that would demand performance and durability.

Rockwell Hardness Range of Monel 400 Bar
The Monel 400 round bar Rockwell hardness range is B60 to B95, depending on manufacturing conditions and degree of cold working:
|
Condition |
Rockwell Hardness (HRB) |
Brinell Hardness (HB) |
Notes |
|
Annealed |
B60 – B75 |
110 – 149 |
Soft, fully ductile — best for forming and welding operations |
|
Cold Drawn (light) |
B75 – B85 |
149 – 180 |
Moderate strength increase; good machinability retained |
|
Cold Drawn (heavy) |
B85 – B95 |
180 – 210 |
Maximum cold-work hardness; use where wear resistance is required |
Engineers specifying Monel 400 bar for machined pump shafts, valve stems, or fastener applications typically call for B80 – B95 (cold drawn condition). For weld-fabricated assemblies, specify annealed (B60 – B75), higher hardness increases the risk of weld cracking.

Frequently Asked Questions About Monel 400 Round Bars
Can Monel 400 Round Bar be heat treated?
Monel 400 is not a hardened material and cannot be hardened by heat treatment because it is a nickel-copper alloy of solid solution. Cold working is the only way to attain strength. When synthetic components need to be relieved in terms of stress, annealing at about 870degC and rapid cooling of the fabricated components helps alleviate the internal stress and reinstates ductility. In order to reach tensile strength in excess of 600 Mpa, order Monel 400 cold drawn bar, not heat treated. To harden with age, use Monel K500 Round Bars in place of age-hardenable behaviour.
What is the difference between Monel 400 and Monel K500 round bar?
The alloys are the same in their nickel-copper base and are equally resistant to corrosion. The additions to Monel K500, including aluminium and titanium, permit age-hardening the material to tensile strengths of 1,100-1,380 Mpa – about twice that of cold-drawn Monel 400 bar. Monel 400 is cheaper, allows simple welding, and is suited to use in applications with a strength requirement of up to 760 Mpa. Complete Monel 400 vs K500 comparison table is given above.
What does AMS 4675 cover for Monel 400 bar?
The Monel 400 bar, rod, and wire aerospace material specification during the cold drawn or cold rolled, annealed condition, is AMS 4675. It also defines more stringent chemistry and mechanical property specifications than those of ASTM B164, and is therefore the appropriate specification in aerospace, defence and high-reliability procurement. On request Kalpataru Piping is able to supply Monel 400 bar into AMS 4675 with all material test certification.
