Introduction to Monel 400 Fasteners

Monel 400 Fasteners are manufactured using a high quality nickel-copper alloy (UNS N04400 / WNR 2.4360) with the ability to provide exceptional corrosion resistance, good mechanical properties, good fabricability and service life of 25-35 years in severe environments. The alloy is particularly designed to resist extreme chemical exposures which makes it suitable in applications that have high demands such as marine, chemical processing, petrochemical, offshore, oil and gas, and generation of power in power plants. Monel 400 has a mechanical integrity between -30°F to 1000°F (-34°C to 538°C) and sub-zero and high temperature service. They come in a large variety of sizes, M3 to M56, 3/16 inch to 2 inch, they may also be ordered in custom lengths between 3 mm to 200 mm to suit the requirements of a particular project. HS Code: 73181500 when filling in the customs and export documentations.

Monel 400 Material Compounds and Mechanical Properties.

Monel 400 material, a nickel-copper alloy (with an average of 63% and 28%, respectively), offers a compromise of strength and corrosion behavior. Minor levels of iron, manganese and silicon are also present in the alloy and they lend mechanical strength. The composition gives a melting point of approximately 1350°C and a material density of approximately 8.8 g/cm 3, which is high as compared to most of the conventional austenitic stainless steels. These screws provide tensile strength of approximately 550 Mpa and yield strength of approximately 240 Mpa and thus they can be used in higher stress and demanding applications.

Heat Treatment & Machining

Heat Treatment of Monel 400

Monel 400 is typically supplied in the annealed condition. Stress relieving can be performed at 1000°F – 1200°F for about one hour, followed by air cooling. Full annealing is done between 1300°F and 1800°F. This alloy cannot be hardened by heat treatment; hardening is achieved only through cold working.

Machining Parameters for Monel 400 Fasteners

Operation Tool Material Cutting Speed Feed Rate
Turning Carbide (Coated) 80 – 120 SFM 0.005 – 0.015 IPR
Drilling Carbide / HSS Cobalt 30 – 50 SFM 0.003 – 0.008 IPR
Milling Carbide 100 – 150 SFM 0.005 – 0.010 IPT
Threading Carbide / HSS 40 – 60 SFM Per pitch

Machining Challenges with Monel 400

  • Work Hardening: Monel 400 work hardens quickly during machining, and needs sharp tools and controlled feed rates.
  • Tool Wear: Abrasive nature: This leads to increased tool life, carbide tools or coated tools are suggested.
  • Poor Thermal Conductivity: The heat accumulates at the cutting edge; sufficient coolant and reduced speeds are required.
  • Stringy Chips: Does form long stringy chips that may cause interference in machining; chip breakers suggested.
  • Galling Tendency: May gall or capture on tooling; cutting fluids of sulfur assist.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Monel 400?
Monel 400 is a nickel-copper alloy (UNS N04400, WNR 2.4360) containing approximately 63% nickel and 28-34% copper, offering excellent corrosion resistance in marine and chemical environments.
Are Monel 400 fasteners magnetic?
Monel 400 is generally considered non-magnetic, although it may exhibit slight magnetic properties at room temperature depending on its composition and processing history.
How does Monel 400 compare to stainless steel?
Monel 400 offers significantly superior corrosion resistance in seawater, hydrofluoric acid, and sulfuric acid environments compared to standard 304 or 316 stainless steels.
Do you provide material test certificates?
Yes, we provide complete documentation including Mill Test Certificates (MTC), EN 10204 3.1 certificates, PMI reports, and third-party inspection reports with every order.
What is the lead time for custom Monel 400 fasteners?
While standard sizes are often in stock, custom manufactured fasteners typically require 2-4 weeks depending on the complexity and quantity.
Is Monel 400 ferrous or non-ferrous?
Monel 400 is a non-ferrous alloy primarily composed of nickel and copper. While it contains small amounts of iron (up to 2.5%), it is classified as non-ferrous due to its nickel-copper base.
Why is Monel 400 suitable for marine applications?
Monel 400 offers exceptional corrosion resistance to seawater, resists pitting and crevice corrosion, maintains strength in marine environments, and is non-magnetic, making it ideal for marine hardware, offshore platforms, and subsea equipment.
What chemicals can Monel 400 fasteners resist?
Monel 400 exhibits excellent resistance to seawater, hydrofluoric acid (all concentrations), sulfuric acid (up to 80%), alkaline solutions, organic acids, and neutral salt solutions. It is particularly superior in hydrofluoric acid compared to most other alloys.
Can Monel 400 be hardened by heat treatment?
No, Monel 400 cannot be hardened by heat treatment. It is supplied in the annealed condition and can only be hardened through cold working (work hardening).
What is the expected service life of Monel 400 fasteners?
In typical marine and chemical processing environments, Monel 400 fasteners have an expected service life of 25-35 years, significantly longer than standard stainless steel fasteners.
Do you supply Monel 400 fasteners with test certificates?
Yes, every shipment includes complete documentation: Manufacturer’s Test Certificate (MTC) as per EN 10204 3.1, Material Test Reports, PMI (Positive Material Identification) test reports, and Third Party Inspection (TPI) reports upon request.
What are the machining challenges with Monel 400?
Monel 400 tends to work harden rapidly, has low thermal conductivity leading to heat buildup, causes significant tool wear, and produces stringy chips. We recommend using carbide tools, lower cutting speeds, and adequate coolant for best results.
