Duplex Steel Plate UNS S32205, also known as 2205 duplex stainless steel plate is a nitrogen enhanced duplex steel alloy products containing approximately 22% chromium, 5-6% nickel & 3% molybdenum. It is used in harsh environments where both mechanical strength & resistance to stress corrosion cracking are critical. With a two phase microstructure composed of austenite & ferrite in nearly equal proportions, Duplex UNS S32205 offers superior strength compared to austenitic 316L stainless steels and excellent corrosion resistance even in chloride-rich conditions. Cold Forming

The material is well-suited for cold forming using stainless-steel-compatible equipment. Due to its high strength, higher force & allowance for spring back are required compared to standard austenitic grades.

Machinability

Duplex 2205 can be machined similarly to 316L stainless steel but with 20% lower cutting speeds when using carbide tools. Rigid tool setups & powerful machines are recommended for best results and longer tool life.

Welding

This alloy offers excellent weldability using common techniques like TIG, MIG, SMAW, SAW & FCAW. To ensure weld strength & corrosion resistance. Post-weld annealing is usually not required but may be recommended for critical applications.

Heat Treatment

All processing steps involving heat must be followed by a full solution anneal at 1900°F & rapid cooling to prevent intermetallic phase formation. Stress relieving at lower temperatures is not advised due to the risk of reduced corrosion resistance.
