Stainless Steel Pipe Dimensions Chart

Kalpataru Piping Solutions is a major producer and distributor of stainless steel pipes; with a variety of SS pipes of different sizes which are capable of resisting high temperatures and high pressure. We provide and export stainless steel pipes worldwide of different schedules such as Schedule 10, Schedule 40 and Schedule 80 which can be used in different industrial applications.

The data in our SS Pipe Dimensions Chart offer all the information including Nominal Bore (NB), Outside Diameter (OD), wall thickness, weight, schedule according to ASA/ASME/ANSI B36.19 standards. This aids the manufacturers and the engineers to know the power and the appropriateness of each of the pipes in their particular applications. Its capacity to handle pressure is shown by the pipe schedule (SCH 5 to SCH 160 or XXS). As an example, the SS 304 Pipe Dimension Chart includes 1/2 NB to 16 NB which are characterized by great resistance of corrosion and durability. We also supply the stainless steel pipe sizes in mm, with different gauges, thickness of the walls and their weights.

We offer stainless steel pipes in various grades, which include ASTM A312 SS 904L, SS P304L, SS 316 and 316L, SS 321 and 321H, TP347, TP347H, TP310S, TP304H, SS202, SS410, SS 317L, SS 310, SS316H etc. The SS Pipe Weight Chart is used to determine the weight of pipes through multiplication of volume of stainless steel material and its density that is applicable to estimate the total weight prior to installation of the system.

How to Describe Steel Pipe Dimensions and Sizes?

Various standard forms of steel pipe dimensions may be used:
  1. OD-WT – Example: 88. 9mm × 5. 49mm (3 1/2) x (0. 216), or 114. 3mm × 6. 02mm (4 1/2) x (0. 237). Lengths commonly are 6m (20ft) or 12m (40ft), also known as Single Random Length (SRL: 1825ft) or Double Random Length (DRL: 3840ft).
  2. NPS x Schedule (Sch) -Example: NPS 3 in x Sch 40, NPS 4 in x Sch 40, will be the same size as the above.
  3. NPS × Weight Class- NPS 3″ x Sch STD, NPS 4″ x Sch STD, etc. same as above.
  4. Outer Diameter X weight per foot (lb/ft) – This is popular in North and South America. Example: A pipe of OD 3 /2 and weight 16.8 lb/ft, with a weight-height ratio of lb/ft.

Stainless Steel (SS) Pipe Size Chart

Our SS pipe size chart follows SME/ANSI B36.10 standards for welded stainless steel pipes & ASME/ANSI B36.19 for seamless pipes to allow professionals to choose the right pipe size for any application. We also offer customized solutions to suit your specific project needs. SS pipe sizes are available in both inches & millimeters(mm) with nominal bores ranging from 1/8 inch to 24 inches & outer diameters from 10.3 mm to 609.6 mm. SS Pipe Size Chart in mm calculates pipe sizes in metric units & includes conversions between mm & inches. SS pipe dimensions cover grades like ASTM A312 TP304, TP316 & other 200, 300, 400 series alloys.

The SS Pipe Thickness Chart provides wall thicknesses across various schedules. As the schedule number increases, the wall thickness becomes greater, which reduces the internal bore and improves pressure-holding capacity.

For example:

  1. A 4-inch SCH 40 stainless steel pipe has an outer diameter of 114.30 mm & a wall thickness of 6.02 mm.
  2. A 4-inch SCH 80 stainless steel pipe has the same outer diameter but a thicker wall of 8.56 mm resulting in a smaller internal diameter.

Standard Stainless Steel Pipe Sizes and Dimensions

Standard SS pipe sizes are defined by the ANSI/ASME standards. The wall thickness is determined by the schedule type. It will allow industries to choose the right size & schedule based on the application needs.

The standard pipe sizes in mm & inches allow you to choose the right pipe for specific applications very easily. For instance:

  • SCH 10 pipes have wall thicknesses ranging from 1.25 mm to 4.58 mm.
  • SCH 40 pipes have thicknesses between 1.73 mm and 9.53 mm.

These variations directly impact the strength & pressure-handling capability of the pipe. So it’s essential to select both standard stainless steel pipe sizes and thickness as per the intended application and ASME standards. Our comprehensive charts make it easy to identify standard stainless steel pipe dimensions in both metric and imperial units for quick reference and accurate selection.

Dimension Standards for Steel Pipes

Different international standards specify the pipe dimensions of steel and its outer diameter (OD) and wall thickness. Pipes are made using the most common standards, i.e., ASME B36.10 which covers carbon and alloy steel as well as ASME B36.19 which covers stainless steel.

ASME B36.10M

This standard defines the dimensions for stainless steel pipes ranging from NPS 1/8 to NPS 80 along with corresponding wall thicknesses. This standard provides dimensions in both millimeters and inches to specify details such as outside diameter (OD), wall thickness (WT) & typical pipe lengths.

ASME B36.19M

ASME B36.19M specifically applies to standard stainless steel pipes. It outlines the nominal sizes, outside diameter & wall thicknesses for standard stainless steel pipe dimensions. By adhering to this standard manufacturers maintain precision & uniformity, helping engineers and buyers select the correct pipe sizes for their applications with confidence.

What is the Stainless Steel Pipe Dimensions Schedule?

The SS pipe schedule indicated by ASME B 36.10 referred to as “Sch” short for schedule. This notation appears in American steel pipe standards as a prefix to a series number like Sch 80 where “80” is derived from the ASME B 36.10 chart/table.

Stainless steel pipes are used to transport fluids under pressure by making the internal diameter or nominal bore (NB) with correct measurement. To carry pressurized fluids SS pipes must have sufficient strength and wall thickness. Wall thickness is defined by schedules that are abbreviated as SCH to indicate the pipe’s schedule per ASME standards.

The pipe schedule formula is: Sch.=P[σt]×1000\text{Sch.} = \frac{P}{[σ_t]} \times 1000Sch.=[σt]P×1000

Where:

PPP is the design pressure in MPa.

[σt][σ_t][σt] is the allowable stress of the material at the design temperature in MPa.

Schedule 40 or 80 Steel Pipe Dimensions

The schedule number of a pipe indicates its wall thickness. Schedule 40 pipes have a standard wall thickness & Schedule 80 pipes have thicker walls. It is used to determine the pipe strength & pressure capacity.

What is the Nominal Pipe Size (NPS)?

In North America pipe sizes are often specified using Nominal Pipe Size (NPS) a standard measurement that helps identify pipe dimensions. It is typically based on inches and a schedule number. The NPS represents the approximate inside diameter of the pipe whereas the schedule number indicates the wall thickness.

What is DN (Nominal Diameter)

Nominal Diameter (DN) will indicate the average diameter of a pipe for ensuring compatibility between components. For example, DN50 refers to a pipe with a nominal diameter of 50 mm.

Converting DN (mm) to NPS (inch)

Nominal diameter DN (mm) and NPS (inch) conversion

Why are Stainless Steel Pipe Weight Charts Important?

The stainless steel pipe weight chart helps choose the right pipes for specific uses by determining their pressure capacity based on wall thickness and diameter. It simplifies weight calculations by considering the pipe’s thickness, perimeter, and length multiplied by stainless steel density. This information ensures safety and performance standards are met, crucial for transportation and application.

Frequently Asked Questions on Stainless Steel Pipe Dimensions Chart

What is the difference in sizes of stainless steel seamless and welded pipes?

Seamless pipes typically have larger OD sizes (up to 20 inches) & welded pipes usually go up to around 16 inches due to manufacturing limitations.

What is the difference in dimensions of ASTM A312 stainless steel pipes and ASME SA312 tubes?
ASTM A312 and ASME SA312 refer to the same dimensional standards, but SA312 is the ASME-adopted version for boiler and pressure applications. Strength and dimensional tolerances may vary slightly depending on welded or seamless construction.
How to determine pipe thickness tolerance as per ASME?
Use the ASME SA999 standard for thickness tolerance; seamless pipes may have a thickness variation of up to -12.5%.
What is the nominal bore and outside diameter in stainless steel pipes and tubes?
Nominal bore refers to the internal diameter, while OD (Outside Diameter) is the total external width. Both affect pressure ratings and sizing compatibility.
What is the OD tolerance for stainless steel pipes?
Stainless steel pipe outside diameter tolerance varies by size & standard. For 1-1/2″ to 4″ NPS, a common tolerance is ±0.031 inches. Smaller sizes may follow tighter standards like ASTM A269 or A213, with tolerances of ±0.13 mm to ±0.25 mm.
How to define standard pipe size tolerance?
According to ASME SA999, OD under-tolerance is typically -0.031″, and over-tolerance increases with pipe diameter.
What is the size of an SS pipe in mm?
The size of SS pipe in mm is determined by the SS pipe size chart for providing measurements based on the outer diameter of the pipe.
What is the meaning of stainless steel pipe gauge?
Stainless steel pipe gauges indicate the wall thickness in numbers like 5, 10 & many more. A higher gauge number means a thinner wall thickness & larger OD. The lower gauge pipes are stronger and more durable.
What is the dimensional standard for SS pipe?
The dimensional standard for SS pipe is typically governed by ASME B36.19M for stainless steel pipe dimensions.
